The Old City of Toledo · Three Faiths on One Hill

Toledo is built on a hilltop, and inside its walls a church, a mosque and a synagogue stand close together; Christians, Muslims and Jews coexisted here and drove one another out for centuries.

The streets of the old city bend like rope, and even by day you see little sunlight; the city runs special “cellar visits” where you go down to see the secret prayer rooms and torture chambers of the past.

The local saying is this: Toledo never lacks footsteps at night. Those who live here are long used to it, and hear them as a neighbour coming home.
