Palace of Linares · The Best-Known Haunted House in Madrid

The Palace of Linares was built at the end of the nineteenth century as the mansion of the banker Linares, finished with great care: statues on the roof, and stairs of local stone.

The most widely told version is this: during the building work the owner discovered that his wife was having an affair, locked his daughter in the cellar, and the child died there. After that people kept hearing a girl crying and music at night in the palace.

Some researchers who went through the archives say that version does not hold up. The palace is now a cultural institution, and the display boards say: legend is not history, but legend is part of this house too.
