Siwa Oasis · The Oracle in the Desert
Share
Siwa Oasis lies deep in the Sahara, hundreds of kilometres from the nearest town. It holds the oracle of the god Amun; Alexander the Great crossed the desert himself to ask whether he was the son of a god, and the priest gave him a yes.
The oracle temple later collapsed and its stone was used to build other things; what remains in the oasis are salt lakes, the mud-brick walls of the old town, and a few tombs standing in the sand.
The local Berbers say that the desert makes people dream. Those who have been to Siwa find their dreams are not quite the same.
