Pyramids of Giza · Curse of the Pharaohs

After the opening of Tutankhamun’s tomb, several archaeological team members and sponsors died mysteriously, giving rise to the worldwide legend of the “Pharaoh’s Curse.”

Lord Carnarvon died of an infection caused by a mosquito bite just months after entering the tomb; in the years that followed, others associated with the excavation passed away one after another, leading the media to compile a long list of casualties.

Modern research has proposed explanations involving mold and radon gas, but the density of the coincidences has always made it difficult to feel entirely at ease. The inscription on the tomb’s door, “Death shall come on swift wings to him who disturbs the peace of the king,” remains in place.
