Chongqing Qixinggang · Qixinggang Haunted

An old Chongqing saying goes: “Floods in Lianglukou, ghosts in Qixinggang, and exorcisms in Shangqingsi.”

Qixinggang was originally a mass grave outside Tongyuan Gate, where piles of bones accumulated during wartime, making it a focal point for folk legends about haunting spirits.

To this day, a nursery rhyme circulates here: “Tongyuan Gate, gongs and drums sound, come watch them bury the dead.” The older generation would take a detour after dark, saying that once the clock struck midnight on that slope, you could hear someone calling your name—and you must never answer.
