Tasmanian Wilderness · The Animal People Still See

The thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, was the largest carnivorous marsupial; hunted as a sheep-stealing pest, the last one died in a zoo in 1936, and no living one has been photographed since.

But sightings and footprint reports have never stopped, from the 1940s through to recent years; officials have launched searches several times, and the automatic cameras they set out have photographed other things.

The saying in the wilderness is this: it is still there, it has simply learned not to be seen.
