Fremantle Prison · A Wall Within the Wall
Share
Fremantle Prison was built by the convicts themselves and used from the mid-nineteenth century until 1991; inside the walls runs a tunnel the prisoners dug beneath the sea bed to move cargo from the ships into the prison.
It holds the remains of the gallows, solitary confinement cells and lists recording the dead, along with stories of escapes and riots.
Today it is a museum: guided tours by day, and a “torchlight tour” at night, guides taking people through the tunnel and the cells. The last execution here took place in 1991.
