Turquoise Blue Bracelet - The Wood Element

Turquoise was worn for protection for longer than anybody has been writing things down.

The mines in Sinai were being worked for turquoise around 6,000 BC, which makes it one of the oldest stones anyone has ever dug out of the ground on purpose. It was set into amulets across Persia, Tibet and Central Asia long before anyone thought to polish it into beads.

It belongs to the Wood element here. Of the two protective stones in this collection, obsidian is the one that blocks; turquoise is the older and quieter idea — a stone you keep on your body, where the carrying is the point.

One plain thing before you buy. Almost all turquoise on the market has been treated or imitated, and this bracelet is no exception: it is natural stone, dyed to this colour. That is why the beads are so even and carry almost no matrix. We would rather say it here than have you find out after it arrives, and we explain what it means below.

Why people wear it

• As an amulet, in the oldest sense. Turquoise was carried for protection long before it was jewellery, in cultures that never met each other.

• For the colour. Robin's-egg blue is the most recognisable colour in jewellery, and nothing else in this collection comes near it.

Is this real turquoise?

Not in the sense you probably mean. Natural, untreated turquoise almost always carries matrix — the brown or black host rock it grew in — and a strand this clean and this evenly coloured would cost hundreds rather than tens. This is natural stone dyed to the colour, which is how most turquoise-blue jewellery in the world is made. If you want genuine natural turquoise, expect to pay several times more and ask for a lab report; that is a normal thing to ask for in this trade.

How do I tell natural turquoise from dyed?

Matrix is the thing to look at. Real turquoise has irregular brown or black veins of host rock running through it, and no two stones carry the same pattern. Dyed stone is either perfectly clean and uniform, or it carries dark lines that look too even and too sharp. Then look at the drilled hole: on dyed stone it is usually darker than the surface, because that is where the colour collects.

Will the colour come off?

Well-dyed stone does not come off in normal wear. It is worth keeping it dry anyway, because turquoise itself is porous and takes up whatever it touches — skin oil, sunscreen, perfume. That is also why real turquoise traditionally shifts greener over years of wear. On dyed stone you will mostly just see the colour soften very slowly.

Care

Keep it dry. Turquoise is soft and porous — softer than agate or quartz, and it absorbs whatever it touches. Take it off before washing your hands, swimming, or applying sunscreen and perfume, and put it on last when you get dressed. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store it in a pouch away from harder stones.
