The Yellow Jade Mala — Handcrafted

n the old Chinese system of the Five Elements, every colour belongs to an element. Yellow belongs to Earth.

Wood is green, fire is red, earth is yellow, metal is white, water is black. Earth sits at the centre of the circle — the ground the other four stand on. It is the element of patience, of keeping what you have built, of simply being steady when nothing else is. In China, yellow was for a long time the colour of the emperor alone, precisely because it was the colour of the centre.

This is why yellow jade was worn close to the body.
