Moonstone Bracelet - The Water Element

Moonstone does not glow. It splits the light.

That is worth saying plainly, because a photograph of moonstone makes it look as though the beads are lit from inside. They are not. Moonstone is a feldspar, and while it cooled, two slightly different feldspars separated into microscopic layers inside it. Light that enters the bead bounces between those layers and comes back out as a soft, floating sheen that moves as you turn your wrist. Mineralogists named the effect adularescence, after Mount Adula in the Swiss Alps. Everybody else has spent two thousand years calling it moonlight, because that is precisely what it looks like.

The sheen is not always blue. Most moonstone flashes white or silver; a clean blue flash is the rarer version, the one the trade grades highest, and it is what these beads have. It is also why this stone is hard to photograph honestly. The effect needs a light coming from one direction and something darker behind it. In flat daylight the same beads look like clear water with a faint thread of colour running through it — which is the other half of what moonstone is.

It belongs to the Water element: the phase of flow, timing and depth, the element that gets past things by going around them instead of through. The Water materials in this collection do different jobs. Obsidian is the one that blocks. Aquamarine is the one that speaks. This is the one that listens, and it is the quietest of the three — a stone people wear when what they want is less noise, not more.

One plain thing before you buy. Moonstone is softer than quartz and it has a direction: feldspar splits along flat planes, so a knock against a table edge can take a chip out of a bead that quartz would have shrugged off. And it does not hold its colour in every light, as above — what you are buying is an effect, and effects depend on the light. Both of those are the nature of the material rather than a fault in this strand, and we would rather you heard it from us.

Why does the blue only show sometimes?

Because the sheen is not a colour in the stone — it is light being sorted by the stone. It appears when a light source is somewhere behind or beside your hand, and it disappears in flat overhead light, where the same beads look almost like clear glass. To see it at its best, turn your wrist slowly under a single lamp with something dark behind the bracelet. The blue will move across the bead as you rotate it, and that movement is the proof it is real: the effect cannot rub off, because nothing was put on.

Is it real moonstone, or glass?

Real moonstone, and glass is the imitation worth knowing about here, because moonstone is imitated more than it is treated. A glass imitation is uniformly milky, and if it flashes at all, the flash sits flat on the surface and stays put when you turn the bead. On the real thing the sheen floats inside, moves as the angle changes, and the stone around it has natural structure in it — faint wisps and internal lines you can see through a bead this clear. Those small imperfections are what a bead of glass cannot fake.

What is rainbow moonstone?

A different mineral. Rainbow moonstone is labradorite — same feldspar family, friendlier name, and a completely different effect: it throws several colours at once instead of one clean blue or white. It is not a scam, it is just badly named, and half the jewellery sold as moonstone online is actually labradorite. This bracelet is the real moonstone variety, with a single blue sheen. Has it been treated or dyed?

No. Moonstone is one of the few stones in this collection with no standard treatment at all — there is nothing to heat and nothing to soak into it, because the effect came out of the rock when it cooled. You cannot bake a sheen like this into a stone, which is why the trade imitates moonstone with glass rather than upgrading it with heat. Nothing on this bracelet has been coated, filled or coloured.

Can I wear it every day?

Yes, with one caveat. Moonstone sits at about 6 to 6.5 on the hardness scale, below quartz, and feldspar has a direction — it splits along flat planes, so a sharp knock can take a chip out of it where a quartz bead would have survived. Wear it daily, but take it off for the gym, for heavy lifting and for anything that involves hitting your wrist against hard edges. And store it on its own rather than loose in a bowl with harder stones.

Care

Treat it as a stone that is beautiful rather than tough, which is an accurate description of feldspar. Take it off before the gym, before heavy work and before anything where your wrist might meet a hard edge. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray and household cleaners, and give it a rinse in plain water if it ever picks any of them up. Do not put it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Wipe with a soft dry cloth and store it on its own, away from harder stones. Take it off for swimming and showering so the elastic lasts.
