Honey Amber Bracelet - The Earth Element

Tens of millions of years ago this was resin running down a tree.

Amber is not a mineral. It is fossilised tree resin, which makes it the only gemstone we sell that was ever alive. The resin set, hardened, and sat in the ground through an entire geological era before anybody found it and thought to put a hole through it.

It is also the strangest material to wear. Amber is light enough to float in salt water, warm to the touch in a way that stone never is, and soft enough that a fingernail can mark it. All three of those are also how you tell it from plastic, which is worth knowing before you buy amber anywhere.

It belongs to the Earth element — the phase of steadiness, storage and holding on. There is no better illustration of that idea than this material. Earth is the element of keeping things, and amber is what keeping looks like after forty million years.

This bracelet is finished more heavily than anything else in the collection: a gold-tone filigree bead, a blue spacer, a small cluster of red beads, and a carved gourd hanging on a short chain. The gourd is the classic Chinese emblem for keeping good fortune close.

Is it real amber, or pressed, or plastic?

Three different things get sold under this name. Natural amber has irregular internal clouds and no two beads look alike. Pressed amber is made from offcuts and dust bonded together, and it shows a stirred, layered pattern instead of natural clouds. Plastic is even, flat and too light. The salt-water test below tells you whether a piece is amber at all; telling natural from pressed is a matter of reading the cloud pattern. If you want to know which this bracelet is before ordering, ask us — we would rather answer the question than have you guess.

How do I tell amber from plastic?

Two things you can do at home. Weight first: amber is startlingly light for its size. Then salt water — stir a few tablespoons of salt into a glass of water until no more dissolves, and drop a bead in. Amber floats; most plastic sinks; glass goes straight to the bottom. Amber also stays warm in the hand, where glass goes cold.

Will it get damaged?

Amber is soft, around 2.5 on the hardness scale. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, hand sanitiser, alcohol and nail polish remover, all of which dull the surface and cannot be undone. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth and store it in a pouch rather than loose with harder pieces.
