Bracelets in China were strung from wood and seeds long before anyone worked a gemstone into a bead, and the mala tradition starts in that same place. Green sandalwood is what carried over: dense, oily, and heavier in the hand than you expect wood to be.

It is not a true sandalwood — the name is a trade name for a dense tropical hardwood rather than the incense tree. What it does have is a faint, dry scent that fades as it ages, a warmth to the touch that stone never has, and a colour that keeps moving: it starts olive-brown and turns greener as it is exposed to light and handled.

It belongs to the Wood element by nature rather than by classification, and it is the least formal thing we sell. No polish, no shine, no colour to match. This is the bracelet for people who say they do not wear jewellery.

Why people wear it

• Because it is wood, not stone. Warm to the touch, light on the wrist, and the opposite of formal. It is the one that people who do not wear bracelets end up keeping on.
• Because it changes with handling. Green sandalwood takes on colour where your hands go, and goes greener in the light. It ends up looking like yours rather than like the photograph.

Is it really sandalwood?

The name is a trade name rather than a botanical one. True sandalwood is a different tree, and the sweet incense smell people expect from the word is not what this is. Green sandalwood is a dense tropical hardwood, and the scent it carries is faint, dry and fading rather than sweet.

Why is it called green if it looks brown?

Because that is where it goes. Fresh-cut green sandalwood is olive-brown, and it turns greener as it is exposed to light and handled. Wear it for a year and compare it with the day it arrived.

Can it get wet?

Keep it out of water. Wood takes on moisture and gives it off again, and repeating that cycle is what eventually splits a bead. Take it off for the shower and the pool, and if it does get soaked, dry it with a cloth rather than letting it sit damp.

How do I tell whether a wooden bracelet is really this wood?

Weight, mostly. Green sandalwood is one of the densest woods used for beads and it sinks in water. If a bracelet sold as green sandalwood feels light and hollow, it is a different timber. Ours is noticeably heavier than it looks.

What are the two accent beads?

One red spacer and one small carved bead, in the way these are traditionally strung. Message us before ordering if you need to know exactly what they are — and if you are shipping outside your own country, it is worth checking your local import rules for carved jewellery, since some materials used for small carved beads are restricted in some places.

Care

Keep it away from water, including the shower and the pool, and out of prolonged direct sun, which dries wood out. Wipe it with a dry cloth. There is no need to oil it — this wood is naturally dense and oily, and adding more will leave the surface tacky.
