Aquamarine Bracelet - The Water Element

Aquamarine is Latin for seawater. That is also, more or less, the colour.

The name has been in use for close to two thousand years and nobody has found a better one. Aquamarine is beryl — the same mineral family as emerald — and it comes out of the ground across a range that runs from almost clear to a deep, greenish blue.

Before it was a jewellery stone it was a travelling stone. Roman sailors carried it for safe passage, and the habit never really left: aquamarine is still the stone given to someone who is about to go.

It belongs to the Water element — the phase of flow, communication and clear feeling. In this system it is less a stone of luck than a stone of being understood, which is why it is the one we suggest most often to people whose work runs on words.

Genuine aquamarine is rarely perfectly clean. Look for a faint blue that leans slightly green, and some internal texture — a soft rain of fine inclusions rather than a flat wash of colour. Perfectly even, vivid blue at a low price is almost always dyed quartz rather than beryl.

How can I tell real aquamarine from dyed quartz?

Aquamarine is beryl, and beryl is rarely perfectly clean. Hold it up to the light: real aquamarine usually shows some internal texture and a blue that leans slightly green. Dyed quartz is flatter in colour and more glassy. Price is a signal too — a large, clean, vividly blue strand is not a cheap object, and anyone selling one cheaply is selling something else.

Is aquamarine a birthstone?

Yes. It is the birthstone for March, and the traditional gift for a nineteenth wedding anniversary. It is also the Water-element stone in this system, so it can be the right choice for two entirely different reasons.

If it is named after the sea, can I wear it in water?

You would think so. The name comes from the colour, not from any tolerance for chlorine. Take it off before swimming or showering and keep it away from sunscreen and perfume, which dull the polish over time.

Which wrist should I wear it on?

Traditionally the left wrist draws energy in and the right wrist sends it out. For a stone about communication either is defensible; most people wear it on the left.
