Natural amber has irregular internal clouds and no two beads look alike. Pressed amber is made from offcuts and dust bonded together, and it shows a stirred, layered pattern instead of natural clouds. Plastic is even, flat and too light. The salt-water test below tells you whether a piece is amber at all; telling natural from pressed is a matter of reading the cloud pattern.
