This colour formed in the rock: iron oxide sitting inside the chalcedony as it hardened, running through the bead rather than parked on its surface. Nobody helped it along. Cherry red is the pale, more transparent end of the range. Persimmon red is the dense one: a saturated red that leans warm in daylight and reads deep indoors. The old mines at Baoshan, in Yunnan, were worked from the Ming dynasty onwards and were effectively exhausted by the twentieth century, and for decades the stone was off the market altogether. It returned in 2009, when a new deposit was found at Liangshan in Sichuan. Since then it has been one of the most copied materials in the trade — heated agate, dyed quartz and cheaper red stone all travel under the same name — because genuine colour is a small part of what comes out of the ground.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt belongs to the Fire element: the phase of warmth, drive and being seen. Two things are worth checking on any of them. On dyed stone the colour pools in the drilled hole and in the cracks, so those look darker than the surface.
